Naples With Kids: The Shallow-Water Advantage

The case for Naples with young children rests almost entirely on the water. There is no meaningful swell on this coast, the bottom shelves out very gradually, and the Gulf sits between 75 and 88°F depending on the month. A toddler can stand in it a long way from shore. That single fact removes most of the stress of a beach holiday.

Best beaches for families

• Lowdermilk Park — the answer for children under ten. Playground, volleyball, restrooms, showers, a snack bar, shade on the lawn and a real parking lot. Not the prettiest beach in town, easily the most workable.
• Vanderbilt Beach — a parking garage, food and drink within sight of the sand, and wide shallow water. The convenience beach.
• Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park — better for slightly older kids who will walk and look for shells. Watch the pass at the north end; the current there is strong and it is not a swimming spot.
• Clam Pass — the boardwalk through the mangroves is an adventure in itself, and the tram means nobody has to be carried.
• Tigertail Beach, Marco Island — the lagoon is shallow, protected and full of birds and fiddler crabs. Best low-tide beach in the region for small children.

Things to do that are not the beach

Naples Zoo

Small, well-run, built into a historic botanical garden, with a boat ride past primate islands that is genuinely good. Two to three hours. Best in the morning, both for animal activity and for heat.

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

The 2.25-mile boardwalk is flat, shaded and stroller-friendly, and there is a very reasonable chance of alligators, which resolves any question of engagement. Bring water and go early.

Golisano Children's Museum of Naples

The rainy-afternoon insurance policy, and better than it needs to be. Ages roughly two to ten.

Baker Park and the Gordon River Greenway

Paved paths along the river, playground, splash area, and enough bike-able distance to burn off an evening.

A boat trip with children

It works, with two conditions: keep it short and keep it inside. A two-hour bay-and-pass trip is about the ceiling for most under-eights, and the bay is calm even when the Gulf is not. Dolphins do the heavy lifting on engagement.

What matters more than the itinerary is the boat. A small private charter can turn around, slow down, or come back in early without negotiating with sixty other passengers, and it can carry a cooler and a nap. Ask about life jacket sizes when booking — the small ones are not always aboard by default.

Structuring the day

1. 017:30–11:00 a.m. — Beach or water. Cool, calm, empty, and the UV index is survivable.
2. 0211:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. — Indoors or shaded. Lunch, nap, museum, pool. In summer this is not optional; the afternoon storm will make the decision for you.
3. 034:00–8:00 p.m. — Back out. Second beach session, playground, and sunset. The evening beach is the best beach in Florida with kids and almost nobody uses it.

Practical notes

• Sun here is stronger than it feels in the sea breeze. Rash guards beat reapplication.
• Sea turtle nesting runs May to October. Fill in any holes dug in the sand before you leave — hatchlings fall into them.
• Beach wagons are worth renting. The walk from the car to the sand is longer than it looks at Delnor-Wiggins and Clam Pass.
• Most Naples restaurants are quiet and adult-leaning. The waterfront places at Tin City and Bayfront are the easiest with children, and 5:30 p.m. is a much better idea than 7:30.
